QUICK OVERVIEW

MOM.MI, a product platform powered by Amazon, is addressing the challenges of racial inequalities in childbirth by providing BIPOC parents with the tools to access health insights, manage record sharing, and communicate with care providers to deliver better health outcomes.

Background

BIPOC women have been historically ignored or provided less-than-optimal care during birth.

In the U.S., they are 2.5x more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes, a rate close to developing nations. Most of these deaths are a result of preventable complications, an outcome that highlights the inequalities in medical care, if other factors remain equal (economic status, reproductive planning, and prenatal risk factors).

The Problem

BIPOC women face inequalities that cause them to lose trust in their providers, and lose their sense of autonomy and control over decision-making in their delivery.

How can we help BIPOC expecting parents to feel secure, supported, and informed throughout their labor and delivery experience while building an accountability system for health providers?

Introducing MOM.MI

An intelligent care companion that provides confidence in care. MOM.MI is an AI-powered listening ecosystem that:

1. Monitors the expecting mother's physical and emotional health

2. Send updates and alerts to the patient's care team

3. Creates a patient experience record that can be shared with other doctors and caregivers

Product Area of Focus

MOM.MI can be used at any point during a parent's pregnancy, collecting data to evidence solutions that may decrease the overall maternal mortality rate in the US. But we're focusing on in-hospital product interactions (the intrapartum period) for this proof of concept.

HOW IT WORKS

With MOM.MI, you can get a complete picture of your care through cataloged summaries distributed by your healthcare provider during and after labor. It also allows you to manage what type and how much information you share with your support team, including family, friends, and other care providers who are helping you through this life-changing time.

Reflections

MOM.MI is poised to impact how pregnancy care is provided beyond just the labor and delivery process.

If applied, it will support parents throughout their pregnancies by building that bridge of trust with their care team earlier, and by distributing vital information to all parties. Information previously uncollected by traditional means, like emotional and environmental data, can inform and improve the quality of their care overall.

Even if a delivery ends in loss, MOM.MI can help provide Maternal Mortality Review Committees with more context for their cases, and more substantial recommendations for decreasing mortality rates. This can lead to happy, healthy, and—most importantly—living mommies and babies.
